DESCRIPTION
A natural oil extracted from the seeds of the tung tree. The Natural Paint Company Pure Tung Oil penetrates deeply into the timber and gives an elastic and water-resistant surface. It is a non-toxic, VOC-free and chemical free finishing oil that has excellent sealing properties. Pure Tung Oil is completely food safe and can be used on all exterior and interior timber as well as children’s toys, kitchen utensils and animal hutches.
We recommend looking at our Citrus Thinner as a great orange smelling solvent to clean up brushes or to thin out our Tung Oil if needed.

PREPARING THE SURFACE(TIMBER)
- Prepare the surface in accordance with standard practice.
- Previous coats of other products must be removed.
- The surface must be well sanded: We recommend 180-600 grit. The finer the better.
- Ensure the surface is clean, free from grease and dry (with a maximum timber moisture content of 12% where relevant).
- Wipe timbers containing high amounts of resins or terpenes with The Natural Paint Company Thinner, using a lint free cloth – especially on rimu, matai, oak, some tropical timbers etc.
- If glue is used in a laid timber floor, ensure it is fully hardened before applying product.
- Always test for suitability on your substrate.
APPLYING THE PRODUCT(TIMBER AND MUDBRICK)
- Stir thoroughly before using.
- Ventilate well when working with the product and while it is drying.
- May be thinned 10-50% with The Natural Paint Company Thinner.
- Apply in thin even coats by brush or roller. 1-4 coats required depending on the absorbency of the substrate and the required finish. Lightly sand between coats if necessary.
- Never pour the oil on the surface as this will result in patchiness and staining that sanding will not remove.
- After 30-60 minutes the excess oil must be removed with a lint-free cloth. The oil can be padded in using a professional machine and green pad, any oil remaining must be removed with a lint-free cloth.
Note: Any oil remaining on the surface will result in a sticky, shiny, non-drying finish!
DRYING
- Can be sanded and recoated after surface is fully dry (non-tacky), generally 12-24 hours at 20°C/50-55% relative humidity. Product will be fully cured after 14 – 30 days.
Note: The drying time of oil-based products is prolonged by:
High humidty and/or low temperatures during application and drying time; absorption of natural terpenes, oils, waxes or resins from the substrate, poor ventilation and thick coats.
TUNG OIL FOR CONCRETE FLOORS
Tung Oil is an excellent finish for concrete floors through-out the house. Because it is a penetrating oil it soaks deeply into the concrete and when cured, strengthens the concrete making it more durable against cracking. It also has excellent water-proofing qualities, abrasion resistance and lets the concrete breath, increasign the life of the floor.
APPLYING THE PRODUCT(CONCRETE FLOORS)
- Prepate the surface in accordance with standard practice.
- Previous coats of other products must be removed.
- Ensure the surface is clean. Clean floor with mop and warm soapy water.
- Stir thoroughly before using.
- Ventilate well when working with the product and while it is drying.
- Floor dloor with Tung Oil, keep applying regularly over a 24-hour period until it does not soak it in/absorb any more Tung Oil. Periodically, move Tung Oil on floor onto any dry patches.
- Once Tung Oil has stopped soaking in, use clean rags (lint free) to rub off all excess until the cloths are completely clean.
- Let floor cure for a week at least before subjecting to high traffic.
This application will result in a nice low sheen/matt finish. You can also burnish it or buff it at a later date if you wish to give a more satin/glossy finish.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE:
Try a small area first to get used to the application. Any direct sunlight will cause product to gel-up, so it would need to be applied, wiped off after an hour, applied again, wiped off after an hour until it stops soaking in, in areas that will get direct sun.
You can also make your own crack filler using Tung Oil and Lime which will make a filler paste.
